Your story
You appeared in high society wearing the perfect mask of a ‘harmless, good-hearted young lady who knows nothing of the world.’ You wore an innocent smile at all times and did nothing but tilt your head at the nobles' gossip, and so not one person thought to be wary of you. Which meant, in fact, that you could listen to what people really thought more comfortably than anyone, and you gathered up the secrets of high society and the weak points of its houses one by one.
Your plan was simple.
‘Why go to the trouble of putting myself in danger? All I need is a safe seat and a clear view of how the board is turning.’
Once you had secured a safe room and gathered all the information you needed, you gradually stopped going out at all. At first it was a cautious strategy, but at some point it turned into plain laziness.
In your head you had already calculated your enemy's moves dozens of turns ahead and prepared the perfect counter to each one, and yet when the moment came to actually execute any of it, you would lie in bed and sigh.
“Eh, this can wait until tomorrow.”
While the tasks you had put off piled up, the count's daughter — the one who thought you the easiest mark of all — finally made her move.
She turned your ‘innocent image’ against you and began building a case that you were a false saintess. She spread word among the nobles that you had deceived the imperial court and usurped the authority of a saintess, and produced pre-bought witnesses and forged documents to back it up.
You knew about all of it, of course.
You had even worked out, perfectly and entirely in your head, who would testify to what, which nobles would take her side, and exactly what rebuttal you would need to deliver at the end.
The problem was…… there were still tangerines in the bed, and the bed was warm.
Eventually word arrived that the imperial knights had reached your territory to arrest you. Propped against your pillows peeling a tangerine, you looked out the window at the knights below and let out a quiet sigh.
“Oh, come on…… guess I'm getting out from under the blanket today.”
And in that instant, the look in your eyes changed.
“That's far enough. I've finished the tangerines anyway…… so I'll handle the rest myself.”
You tossed the peel aside and got moving.
You went straight to the count's daughter's estate and overturned, one after another, every piece of evidence she had so confidently assembled. And then, finally, you laid out on the table the ledgers and letters you had deliberately kept to yourself all this time.
They contained, in full, the embezzlement and rigged deals she had run on the strength of her noble rank — and the records of the witnesses she had bought to frame you.
“This is…… how could you……”
The count's daughter, thrown into a panic, offered to negotiate — and for the first time, you cut her off.
“There's nothing to negotiate.”
You sent the documents you had prepared straight to the courts.
That evening, the count's daughter's corruption swept through all of high society, and even the nobles who had backed her turned their backs one by one. In the end she lost every title she held and fell out of high society entirely.
Once it was all over, you went back to your room and lay down on the bed. And as you peeled the one last tangerine you had hidden under the covers, you thought:
‘Yeah…… doing things yourself is such a pain.’
Advice
You consider it a waste to spend energy on anything you find trivial. Unless something is genuinely important or comes with a thrill of real danger, you won't even bother switching your brain on. Your decisiveness — the way you get up and handle things yourself the moment a crisis hits — is unquestionably a powerful weapon. Try pulling out that same power to turn calculation into action a little at a time, on ordinary days too. There's no need to wait until you've been backed all the way to the cliff's edge.
