Your story
In the ballrooms of a high society where splendor and bloodshed ran side by side, you always stood one step back and observed people's interests with a cool eye. Because you understood better than anyone that making no enemies was the finest survival strategy there was.
“Keep on good terms with that one, but never get too close. That house is going to fracture before the quarter is out.”
You fought with no one, and became no one's enemy.
Born the daughter of a countly house neither high nor low, you had no particular reason to stake your life on a fight. And so you went on living a peaceful life, without a single enemy or grudge to your name.
Then one day, that peace collapsed in an instant.
Your childhood friend, the son of a viscount's house, was framed as the culprit behind an incident actually committed by the heir to a ducal house. The evidence was perfect to an unnatural degree, and even the imperial investigators bowed their heads before the ducal house's pressure.
You knew he was innocent. The problem was that there was no way to prove it.
At first you thought about carefully asking some of the other nobles for help. But every time, the thought that taking anyone's side might make you an enemy of the ducal house made you hesitate.
“I'm sorry, but…… if I get involved too, this will only get bigger.”
The people you had always known were much the same. Every one of them was kind to you, and not one of them was willing to take a risk to help.
In the end, several days slipped past with you unable to do anything at all.
And the moment you heard that your childhood friend's execution had been set, you understood something for the first time.
That what you had been protecting all this time was not peace, but merely a safe zone built so that you would never lose anything.
“All this time, with avoiding danger as my excuse…… when it was finally time to stand up for someone precious to me, I pulled my foot back.”
You stared out the window for a long while, then slowly rose from your seat.
“It's not too late to change.”
That night, you opened the secret safe you had never once used in your life. You took out the bearer bonds and drafts you had prepared against some future emergency, bribed the jailer, and got your childhood friend out of prison the day before his execution.
When the iron bars swung open, he stared at you as if he could not believe it.
“Why on earth did you come all the way here? The ducal house isn't going to let this go.”
You hesitated a moment, then smiled brightly and answered.
“Because I finally understand something. A life in which you lose nothing…… is also a life in which you can protect nothing.”
But from that moment on, you too became an enemy of the ducal house.
Realizing you could no longer live safely as a count's daughter, you hid your identity and fled with your childhood friend to the countryside.
At first everything felt precarious.
A small room in an old farmhouse, dirt roads you weren't used to, a life in which you had to split your own firewood. The old you would have started by calculating every possible risk.
But strangely, this time you were not afraid the way you used to be.
You were the first to greet the villagers, and when trouble arose you did not pretend not to see it. When a storm came you helped patch a neighbor's roof instead of shutting your door and hiding, and when anyone needed help you were the first to reach out a hand.
Then one day, while you were holding down a neighbor's roof in a driving downpour, your childhood friend came running over in alarm.
“You don't have to do this kind of thing yourself!”
You laughed and answered him through the rain. “The old me wouldn't have. But now…… I'm trying to be a little different.”
And so the two of you grew accustomed, bit by bit, to a new life. The villagers took the two of you in as sincerely as family.
And then one spring day, when the flowers came into full bloom in the little village square —
the two of you held a modest wedding surrounded by the blessings of the villagers. It was no grand court, nor any ballroom full of nobles. But that day you were happier than you had ever been.
You held tight to the hand of the man standing beside you. This time, you did not run.
Advice
You are not someone who enjoys a fight. If anything, you're used to stepping back before conflict can form and keeping the peace. That prudence is certainly a strength of yours — but avoiding every risk isn't always the best choice a life has to offer. Sometimes the courage to take one step forward, for something important or for someone precious to you, is exactly what will make you grow.
