Your story

There was only ever '‘now’' in your head. You thought of yourself as a rather meticulous person, but looking back, what you had were less plans grounded in fact and more useless daydreams that happened to surface at the time.

Born the daughter of a low-ranking noble house, you had no fortune and no impressive backing. What you had instead was a wit that flashed to life in every crisis, and a gift for improvising. The tighter the corner, the better your mind worked; even at the edge of a cliff you would somehow conjure a foothold and leave everyone astonished.

So you always trusted yourself.

Eh, it'll work out somehow...

The problem was that this trust turned into a habit of never preparing.

You had already noticed that the female lead of the original story was wary of you. Strange rumors had begun circulating, and you knew her confidants were approaching you on purpose.

But you didn't think much of it.

“What could people like that possibly do?”

If anything, you took whatever her confidants told you at face value, without much suspicion. That the information they gave you might be a trap, that you might be the one being used — you never thought that far.

Then one day, everything collapsed at once.

The third prince's treason came to light, and you were arrested on charges of having secretly aided him.

“That's absurd! I never did any such thing!”

But as the evidence was submitted to the court one piece at a time, you lost your voice.

A letter you had passed along without a second thought. A small favor you had casually done. A gathering you happened to attend. Even acts you had believed were simple kindnesses — every one of it had been threaded together so cunningly that it could all be read as aiding a treason.

In that moment, you realized it for the first time.

I really did nothing at all to prepare for the future.

On any other day you would have improvised your way out on the spot. But this time was different. There were no records to prove your innocence for you, no witnesses, no evidence to argue back with. Nothing.

“All this time I trusted nothing but quick wit and never made ready for anything…… and now it comes back to me like this.”

For the first time, you wept tears of blood and admitted your own complacency.

But the realization came far too late.

You insisted on your innocence to the very end, but the words of an unprepared person sound like nothing but excuses. In the end you were found guilty of conspiring in treason, and locked away in a cold prison cell.

Advice

For someone as devoted as you are to living in the present, the future tends to feel like something belonging to a very distant day. There's real meaning and beauty in savoring the life in front of you — but living without a long view can leave you losing the overall direction of your life. Small crises you can absolutely wit and improvise your way past; just don't forget to prepare for the big dangers.
